Q: We are now trying to perform a remote control on a Sony Betacam to capture on a PC. Here are the details of our problem:
- Sony Betacam player: model UVW-1200 SP (our customer old model) It uses a 25pin RS232c type. We use a standard cross cable 9pin female d-sub(computer) to 25pin male d-sub (betacam) as recommended by Sony. - We use a software called RS422 OCX to test if the player is detected - We have made all the settings on the Betacam (LTC timecode, remote button) and we checked we are on the corresponding Com port 1
= the software detects no VTR no matter how we try.
We have several question: 1. Is it a problem due to the software which can t detect the Betacam since it is RS232c instead of RS422? 2. Is it a problem due to our cable which doesn t fit, though Sony recommended it to us? We have found your cable and we would like to know what you think about: Item number 2021 Why is there a special cable for this particular Betacam player? 3. Do you know what we can do from now on?
A: The BetaCam UVW-1200 was a popular low cost deck. It's a "PC-VCR" meaning it has a special protocol and uses RS-232 as the connection.
Our software, such as TEPHD for Windows and HDLog for Mac, have the Sony RS232 (1200) protocol built in. Which is also why we sell the special connecting cables such as the 2021 for Windows computers.
The 2021 is not a standard RS232 cross over cable. It has special pinouts and were made specifically for that situation.
You may purchase a 2021 cable from our webstore. However, you must also get a software product that has the UVW1200 protocol built-in (such as our TEPHD software).
